Production capability starts with the business model. The term business model in short, refers to a company’s framework for generating profit. In essence, profit is the remainder of revenue minus costs. The business model focuses on identifying and capitalising on market opportunities (the “revenue side of the coin”), while costs are largely determined by how the company structures itself to realise these opportunities (the “cost side of the coin”).
A business model begins with understanding the needs and demands of a target market. It defines the products or services the target market needs and is willing to procure, prioritising customer spending preferences and usage patterns. This insight guides decisions about packaging, delivery, support, and other key aspects. The business model also establishes a balance between perceived value for the customer and acceptable profit margins for the company, ensuring offerings are competitively priced while maintaining profitability. The business model informs the company’s broader strategy, including its longevity, commitment to win-win outcomes for stakeholders, core values, growth or scaling potential, market positioning, brand promise, and relationships within the supply chain. These strategic foundations influence tactical decisions such as sales planning, marketing efforts, customer relationship structures, support mechanisms, etc. An effective business model must be explicit, leaving minimal ambiguity. It should be revisited annually to align with evolving stakeholder expectations, which serve as key indicators for necessary adjustments or refinements. Stakeholders include customers, suppliers, employees, investors, regulatory bodies, and technology partners, among others.
One of the most common failings in businesses — both large corporations and smaller enterprises—is complacency on their business model. Assumptions based on outdated knowledge often led to stagnation, with companies failing to adapt to changing market dynamics. This complacency creates opportunities for new competitors to emerge and succeed, highlighting the critical importance of continuously refining and innovating the business model.
